The brief called for a design following one of nine options.
I
chose to "express a vibe or identity." I thought about my own personal
identity as a queer & Desi person, & wanted to express it within this
prompt. I decided to create a tea packaging for a hypothetical brand
called “Hi Chai.”
"Hi Chai" would specialize in creating
custom tea blends for their customers. This idea of branding including
packaging would allow me to test my skills in typography, illustration,
packaging design & construction. I was quite excited. :)
I referenced artist
Jamani Roy's work as inspiration for the style I wanted my characters to
take. Using Adobe Illustrator, I created clean lines and color
blocks underneath them, with intent to modernize the traditional
style.
I created three characters, representing my perception of the masculine,
feminine, and day to day personas of myself.
I created this die cut, as well as tea packets based on those of an empty
tea box in my house. I broke down the box, and scanned it to find
packaging dimensions for my design. I then created a proposed packaging
design using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
Through iterative reprints and reconstructions, I created the final
product.
