The brief called for a poster that was eye-catching, and representative of
queer BIPOC individuals in some manner.
The main details to be
included were the name, date, location and time of event.
I was quite inspired by rave posters, and their chunky character designs.
I wanted to reflect this within our design, especially to greater appeal
to our college-level audience.
The characters drawn within the flyer were inspired by the aesthetics of
team members from QTBIPOCA.
I first sketched out simplified thumbnails of the characters and their
features. I further developed these into a second draft with a more
cohesive layout: stacking the characters atop one another.
These two initial drafts were created with thick paint markers
and a normal point Sharpie, with emphasis placed on creating details that
were thick, whether viewed small or large scale. Other accessories and
small details were added later in pen.
With recent trends towards bright neon colors as well as a desire to
turn this flyer into a poster (for sale at the event!!!), I chose a CYM
-K (Cyan, Yellow, Magenta) palette for this flyer, the traditional
“printing colors” which are super vibrant! Hand-drawn graphics of
characters with expressive styles contrast against blocky serif text.
Certain pieces of text were offered emphasis through a “highlighter”
style rectangle overlayed behind the text.
We created mockups of the poster types, and printed the 8.5x11
versions.
We advertised our posters, through both in-person flyering, distribution
of mini-flyers on UT Campus, and through social media!
